UPCEA Partners with UALL to Support Global Lifelong Learning Study
Comprehensive study to strengthen college and university lifelong learning initiatives
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 2, 2024 — UPCEA, the online and professional education association, is proud to support the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL)’s comprehensive global study to help higher education institutions enhance their lifelong learning offerings, The future of lifelong learning: a new study to support universities. This collaboration is in alignment with UPCEA and UALL’s continued partnership, articulated at UALL’s 2023 annual meeting though a Letter of Understanding, to identify, develop and carry out programs mutually beneficial to both associations and continuing education internationally.
The study, conducted by the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL), in partnership with CarringtonCrisp, aims to:
- Understand the learning needs of individuals, employers, and communities
- Develop a sustainable business model for lifelong learning
- Define the meaning and value of lifelong learning for key stakeholders
- Identify benefits for universities, including financial, reputational, and research opportunities
“Lifelong learning is essential as we strive to meet the evolving needs of learners and employers in a rapidly changing world,” said Bob Hansen, CEO of UPCEA. “UPCEA is pleased to support this crucial study as it helps institutions not only understand their global and national standing in lifelong learning but also to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and future opportunities.”
The research will involve desk research, interviews, and surveys of 10,000 learners and 1,000 employers across 40 countries, providing a comprehensive view of lifelong learning trends. The study’s results will support strategic development and demonstrate how universities can play a key role in achieving government objectives related to the economy, society, and individuals.
“As technology accelerates, lifespans extend, and society faces new challenges, universities must transform into lifelong learning institutions,” said Jonathan Michie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and President of Kellogg College at the University of Oxford and Chair, Universities Association for Lifelong Learning. “This research will empower institutions to adapt and innovate, ensuring they remain at the forefront of educational provision and contribute meaningfully to societal and economic progress.”
UALL seeks to champion the broader definition of lifelong engagement with universities through part-time flexible provision offering personal, community and vocational development across the four nations of the United Kingdom. It does so through advocacy in policy development, dissemination of information on policy, practice and funding through a lively program of events, and through research and publication.
Institutions participating in the study will receive a global overview, detailed data on their specific lifelong learning strengths and weaknesses, and guidance on future trends. For more information on participation, please contact Jonathan Michie ([email protected]).
