Innovative and Creative Programming Award – Noncredit Program
Berklee Online and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) collaboration
This award honors the individual and institution demonstrating innovative and creative programming which contribute to the success of Continuing Education and/or community education programs.
This program is an innovative online program collaboration designed to increase access to music education for disadvantaged and at-risk youth living in Latin America. It provides high quality music education delivered through massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the Spanish and Portuguese languages. The courses focus on teaching key concepts and approaches needed to understand, create, and perform music, with a focus on Latin American music styles and interests. At the core of this collaboration, was the need to create a program that aligns with current research that suggests that studying music has long term socio-emotional, neurological, and cognitive benefits. In addition, music-making in groups has been shown to foster social bonding, group cohesion, and shared goals, all of which can lead to increased engagement within family structures and the community.
This rigorous online music curriculum was developed to reach thousands at no charge and increase student access by being downloadable, taken off-line or opened through a mobile device. Through project-based learning, student engagement, and engagement with both current Berklee students and college alumni via course forums, Facebook, or Twitter, programs like these truly make a difference in the lives of students, instructors and communities.
Outstanding Continuing Education Faculty Award
Dr. Tom Rudolph- Berklee Online, College of Music
UPCEA’s Regional 2016 Continuing Education Faculty Award recognizes a continuing education faculty member for outstanding teaching (credit or noncredit).
Dr. Tom Rudolph has been making a difference at Berklee College of Music Online for over 10 years. “Even though Tom is a veteran in teaching, he approaches every course with passion and enthusiasm” writes Carin Nuernberg, Dean of Continuing Education at Berklee. His students commend him for his involvement in their growth and proclaim him to be a “premier mentor of higher learning”. He is recognized as a “genuine human being” who cares, has a friendly approach and makes people feel welcome in the online classroom. Additionally, Tom is an innovator in the realm of online learning. He is recognized by his students as being a master at making the online learning experience a meaningful educational experience and has turned many skeptics into believers in this mode of education.
Outstanding Continuing Education Student Award
Alexandra Deckoff-Jones
University of Massachusetts - Lowell
UPCEA’s Regional 2016 Continuing Education Student Award recognizes a student enrolled in an undergraduate program offered through a division of continuing education who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and an unusual will to learn, not only to enhance his/her own career, but also to add to the quality of life for him/herself, the family and community.
Ms. Deckoff-Jones exemplifies the value of online education as she has been able to pursue her education at a distance while overcoming a serious medical condition that first began in high school. Completing her GED, she enrolled in UMass Lowell’s Bachelor of Arts in Psychology online. Her professors praise her intellect and her ability to “make the best possible use of the online environment, taking advantage of every tool and technology offered, and really making her online experience a deep learning experience, and contributing to the learning experiences of others.” Working with her instructor, Mary Duell, Alexandra worked to pursue her own research agenda by submitting to the Journal of Rehabilitation Psychology research entitled: “Impact of Disability Type and Accommodation Type on Evaluations of Accommodation Appropriateness.” By leveraging her online experience through an online delivery modality and by presenting the college’s first research project presented by a student in absentia using You Tube, Alexandra has made herself a very visible member of the learning community.
Engagement Award
MATHTEACH
Collaboration between Harvard University Division of Continuing Education and Texas Graduate Center
The UPCEA Engagement Award is offered in recognition of an outstanding mutually-beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources between a member institution and one or more external constituents, such as local communities, corporations, government organizations, or associations. This year’s 2016 Engagement Award has been earned through a collaboration of the Harvard Extension School at the Harvard University Division of Continuing Education and Texas Graduate Center.
Beginning in 2012, the Harvard Extension School and Texas Graduate Center, a division of the Texas Valley Communities foundation, formed a collaborative effort called MATHTEACH. This program consists of a virtual professional development program for the most dedicated and determined Math teachers in the area working with underserved students in the Rio Grande Valley area. Teachers engage in a rigorous selection process and once selected are provided with in-depth math training in a master’s degree program which they would not otherwise have access to in Texas. The primary goal of the partnership is to support the growth and academic advancement of these dedicated math instructors who are assisting underrepresented youth to prepare for college. Many of these young individual teachers are the first in their families to be exposed to the college experience, and they come from areas with low secondary and college graduation rates. It is this program’s novel approach in creating a dynamic learning center for teachers in Texas coupled with ongoing work to continue to grow a supportive partnership that MATHTEACH exemplifies this award.

Employers have widely reported a skill gap between the knowledge, skills and abilities they need and the knowledge, skills and abilities they see in graduating students. The Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation Fund grant, awarded to the Orange County Workforce Investment Board, was focused on addressing this gap. Orange County Workforce Development Board saw this as an opportunity to bring business and education stakeholders to the same table in order to allow the business stakeholders to define educational outcomes they require, to catalog the existing curriculum, and make determinations as to what curriculum needed to be developed to fill the gap. Collaborative work resulted in several IT/business certificate programs designed with the learning outcomes defined by business, a robust internship system, specialized veterans’ services, and scholarships for eligible students. The partnerships that were developed as a result of this funding and the vision of Orange County Workforce Development Board have already provided all partners, including Brandman University, with the opportunity to develop new collaborative working relationships between business and education resulting in robust programs, new marketing channels, comprehensive student services and more.

Donna Lester is an undergraduate distance student in the University of Wyoming’s Social Science degree program. Donna is a single parent of two sons, works part time, volunteers in the Cody, WY community, and is a full time student, maintaining a 3.8 cumulative GPA.
Although Donna is a Wyoming native, she worked for years as a staffer in the State of California, working as a counselor in drug and alcohol treatment programs targeting mothers of young children and supporting those mothers in reclaiming their lives. She returned to Wyoming in 2012 to live near her mother. As she commenced her University of Wyoming degree program, she learned that her mother was terminally ill with lung cancer. Totally committed to her educational goals, she continued her academic journey, though experiencing tremendous grief from the eventually passing of her mother. Her commitment to academic success, service to others, and support for her sons has not wavered, and she is firmly on a track to graduate from the university in two years’ time [or less]. Donna is an inspiration and a cause for celebration for all of us in the Outreach School. She continues to assert that this continued success is only possible due to distance education that is appropriately geared to the needs of nontraditional adult learners.

Outstanding Administrative Process or Service
Summer Revenue Projection Tool
California State University, Chico, Regional and Continuing Education
Regional and Continuing Education (RCE) administers a self-supporting Summer Session in partnership with the University’s seven colleges. RCE is expected to return revenue to the campus to support the mission of the University. The goal of the process nominated for this award is to provide the college deans with the information and incentive they need to make real-time, data-driven decisions that directly impact Summer Session and increase the revenue available for distribution to the colleges. Those decisions require an effective and easy way for deans to monitor projected revenue against faculty cost and to track the impact of daily enrollment changes during the registration period leading up to the start of Summer Session on the overall financial return they wish to realize. Using actual salary figures and enrollment and revenue projects, RCE created an administrative process and revenue projection tool that empowers deans with real-time data to make decisions about faculty assignments, enrollment capacity, and whether the college can afford to run an under-enrolled class or if an additional section is financially viable. As a result of this process, in Summer Session 2013 an additional 201 students were served and $180,180 in additional revenue was generated.
Outstanding Non-traditional Student Award
Mary Ellen Hurley
B.S. in Sociology
Oregon State University Extended Campus
Outstanding Nontraditional Student: Pictured (L to R): Tyler Hansen and Lisa Templeton, Oregon State University, award-winner Mary Ellen Mooney Hurley, Oregon State University, Wendy Evers, UPCEA Region West Chair, San Diego State University and Jessica DuPont, UPCEA Region West Secretary, Oregon State University
Mary Ellen Hurley’s life story is long and complicated, but one can try to sum it up with a series of numbers. She spent 21 years in Dayton, Oregon, as the neighborhood “mom” to pregnant teens and wayward kids who needed help that no one else was willing to give. Hurley used to drive 100 miles each day from Dayton to Corvallis and back for her Oregon State classes.
In 2011 she packed up and moved 2,600 miles to Kauai in the middle of her studies as an Oregon State University Ecampus student. Using her online course work in rural environmental sociology as a guide, she serves as the director of a community garden and food pantry that combine to feed 300 families every week. The locals call her “Auntie”. And this June – two months before her 52nd birthday – Hurley earned a college degree. It was an educational journey that took more than 30 years to complete, but she sees it as the beginning of perhaps the most important work of her life.
Excellence in Teaching Award
Stanley Gregory
Oregon State University
Stan Gregory is 32 years into his career as an award-winning educator and a widely respected leader in ecological studies. In a matter of months he will retire from Oregon State University, and the distance students who revere his teaching methods will be left with a notable void in their academic pursuits.
With his legacy fully intact, Stan could approach Year 33 like a victory lap, content to fall back on the robust instructional practices he has employed over three decades. Instead, he’s treating it like a professor who still has something to prove.
“To be very honest, I do not feel that I have achieved the level of individualized student interaction and mentoring that I desire,” he said recently. It’s an odd statement considering that all the evidence suggests Stan in an outstanding mentor of students.
The impact of Stan’s instructional expertise resonates with OSU’s distance students around the globe, including hydrologists, biologists and other scientists who seek out his courses in order to meet certification requirements for various professional societies and organizations. Other Oregon State faculty also have benefited greatly from his work; in April he shared his online teaching experiences and successes at the annual Oregon State Ecampus Faculty Forum, where hundreds of instructors and OSU administrators gather to discuss excellence in online teaching. His presentation was titled “Online Labs: Creative Solutions to the Impossible,” and it was very well received and inspired his OSU colleagues in science-related fields to explore innovative ways to develop and improve similar courses online.
It is fair to say that OSU will not be recognized as a national leader in fisheries and wildlife were it not for the decades-long efforts made by Stan in and out of the classroom. He is highly sought-after expert on matters of river restoration and conservation, and his knowledge and enthusiasm have been shared with large, diverse audiences as a result of serving on numerous boards and commissions throughout the years. Included among them are the National Science Foundation’s Biocomplexity Program, Oregon Department of Forestry, National Academy of Sciences and Willamette River Basin Task Force.
